The West Wales area association is implementing a new structure to ensure that Safeguarding is embedded into all football within West Wales. Together we are building a culture that ensures a positive football environment is provided to all. We are seeking interest from individuals with a background in safeguarding.
To promote and ensure the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of children, young people, and adults at risk within football. The Safeguarding Officer acts as the first point of contact for all safeguarding concerns, ensures compliance with safeguarding regulations, and works with coaches, staff, volunteers, and external agencies to create a safe and positive football environment.
We are writing to update you on Project Chwarae, the FAW’s review of weather-related postponements in grassroots football and to invite you to consider taking part in the forthcoming pilots.
The opening phase of the project has seen excellent engagement from across the Welsh football family. An online survey attracted responses from players, coaches, referees, clubs, and league officials, offering a clear picture of current views on the principle of adjusting the grassroots football calendar. Feedback highlighted a wide range of benefits, challenges, and important considerations that will help shape the next stage of the review.
In addition to the survey, we have carried out an extensive programme of consultation. This has included meetings and discussions with FAW Area Associations, grassroots league representatives, Welsh local authorities, and several other national governing bodies of sport. To ensure the perspectives of those most directly involved in the game were captured, focus groups were also held with players, referees, and coaches.
Pilot Programme
We are moving to the next stage of the project, where we will look to run a series of pilots with interested Welsh grassroots football leagues across both the 2025/26 and the 2026/27 seasons. These pilots will help us assess the impact on weather-related postponements and the overall experience for all stakeholders, as well as wider impacts such as participation and volunteer capacity. We want to ensure that any future recommendations are evidence-based and practical.
Pilot phase 1 & 2
We are now launching phase 1 and are inviting leagues playing U6-U11 football to take part in this first pilot phase. (Please see the link for the form below) This will see leagues invited to play a pilot season between March 2026 to November 2026, with a minimum 4-week break taken typically in August.
Finally, we are planning to share publicly the next stage of Project Chwarae in the next week or so and are also developing a dedicated section on www.faw.cymru to ensure that we can keep everyone updated as the project progresses over the next few months.
Thank you for your continued support for Welsh football and for the vital role your league plays in the grassroots game.
